Earlier write up [Grammar Recapitulation (Part I)] gave an introduction of 'The Sentence'. In this write up I would further explain 'Kinds of Sentences' in detail:
Kinds of Sentences
Declarative Sentence
Those sentences which assert something are called Declarative or Assertive Sentences. They can be simply called Statements. A Declarative Sentence ends with a full stop (.) Declarative Sentences are of two types :- Affirmative Sentence: Affirmative sentences are those that agree or support a statement. For example :
- I am a teacher.
- Earth revolves round the sun.
- Ramcharitmanas was written by Tulsidas
- Negative Sentence : A sentence that negates a particular statement is called a Negative Sentence. It is not necessary that it would imply something bad. It just conveys that a particular statement is false. For example :
- No man is totally perfect.
- You will not be able to reach on time.
- I haven't prepared for my exams.
Imperative Sentence
Those sentences which give command, request or advice are called Imperative Sentences. An Imperative Sentence ends with a full stop (.) For example :- Shut the door.
- Give me a glass of water please.
- You should go to a doctor.
Interrogative Sentence
Those sentences that inquire about something are called Interrogative Sentence. An Interrogative Sentence ends with a question mark (?) For example:- Have you finished your homework?
- What is your name?
- Who built the Taj Mahal?
Exclamatory Sentence
A sentence that expresses a sudden feeling, such as, pleasure, sorrow, surprise, excitement etc. are called Exclamatory Sentences. An exclamatory sentence ends with an exclamation mark (!) For example :
- What a beautiful dress you are wearing!
- How disgusting it is!
- Hurrah! We won the match.
Optative Sentence
Those sentences that express wish or blessing are called Optative Sentence. An optative sentence ends with an exclamation mark (!) For example:
- May you live long!
- I wish I were a bird!
- Wish you a happy journey!
