Grammar Recapitulation (Part 2)

Earlier write up [Grammar Recapitulation (Part I)] gave an introduction of 'The Sentence'. In this write up I would further explain 'Kinds of Sentences' in detail:
Kinds of Sentences
There are five different kinds of sentences: Declarative, Imperative, Interrogative, Exclamatory and Optative.
Declarative Sentence
Those sentences which assert something are called Declarative or Assertive Sentences. They can be simply called Statements. A Declarative Sentence ends with a full stop (.) Declarative Sentences are of two types :
  • Affirmative Sentence: Affirmative sentences are those that agree or support  a statement. For example :
  1. I am a teacher.
  2. Earth revolves round the sun.
  3. Ramcharitmanas was written by Tulsidas
  • Negative Sentence : A sentence that negates a particular statement is called a Negative  Sentence. It is not necessary that it would imply something bad. It just conveys that a particular statement is false. For example :
  1. No man is totally perfect.
  2. You will not be able to reach on time.
  3. I haven't prepared for my exams.
Imperative Sentence
Those sentences which give command, request or advice are called Imperative Sentences. An Imperative Sentence ends with a full stop (.) For example :
  1. Shut the door.
  2. Give me a glass of water please.
  3. You should go to a doctor.
Interrogative Sentence
Those sentences that inquire about something are called Interrogative Sentence. An Interrogative Sentence ends with a question mark (?) For example:
  1. Have you finished your homework?
  2. What is your name?
  3. Who built the Taj Mahal?
Exclamatory Sentence
A sentence that expresses a sudden feeling, such as, pleasure, sorrow, surprise, excitement etc. are called Exclamatory Sentences. An exclamatory sentence ends with an exclamation mark (!)  For example :
  1. What a beautiful dress you are wearing!
  2. How disgusting it is!
  3. Hurrah! We won the match.
Optative Sentence
Those sentences that express wish or blessing are called Optative Sentence. An optative sentence ends with an exclamation mark (!) For example:
  1. May you live long!
  2. I wish I were a bird!
  3. Wish you a happy journey!
* Next write up will cover the topic  Subject and Predicate
and also give an introduction to Parts of Speech
